Nothing Like the Holidays (2008), Humboldt Park: the tree scene with Alfred Molina, John Leguizamo and Freddy Rodríguez. From David’s Chicago Showbiz channel.
Same scene, another angle, filmed from across the street during the shoot. From David’s Chicago Showbiz channel.

The tree guy

David showed up early and rehearsed his lines to the only scene partner around: a handmade, gloriously ugly prop tree. Crew radios crackled about a “crazy guy talking to the tree” until someone checked the call sheet and confirmed he was on the schedule. The scene was cut, but it left one trace in the film: Alfred Molina’s line about calling the tree guys back.

About

David Hernandez never went looking for an acting career. It found him. He grew up on the streets of Humboldt Park. In 1984, at Casa Central, a woman in a long fur coat swept past him: Myrna Salazar, an agent casting a movie. Days later, Sylvia Giannini and Jack Ginay of NBC Chicago interviewed him at Augusta and Rockwell. His first time on television was as Carlos in Still a Stranger (1984), a prime-time national NBC docudrama, opposite René Enríquez. Salazar wanted to sign him on the spot, and the lady in the fur coat found him. In 1987, the Chicago Sun-Times featured him in a Vista Magazine cover story. David later stepped away to Wichita and became an entrepreneur.

Searching for Hispanic Talent

Vista Magazine (Chicago Sunday Sun-Times pull-out), cover story, February 8, 1987, by Constance Kwain.

Cover story on the Myrna Salazar and Associates talent agency; David is pictured with model Leticia Herrera under the caption “Plucked from the barrio.”

Salazar does not wait for talent to come to her but seeks it out in the neighborhoods. She found 17-year-old David Hernández on the street. A photo she made at their first encounter reveals a high school dropout with a caged expression, hunched shoulders, thumbs thrust in his beltloops. After posing lessons, haircuts, new clothes and several sessions before the camera—all at the agency’s expense—the contrast is startling.

The transformed Hernández is handsome, clear-eyed, dynamic. He has appeared in a national commercial for Domino’s Pizza and had a leading role in the TV movie Night of Courage, which was filmed in Chicago last August. He also has returned to school.
